  • 3 min read

A collaboration based on shared values of love, kindness, friendship and respect for nature.

"How nice to be on your own for a bit and do what you like" - Moominmamma, from the book Moominland Midwinter

The Moomins might originate from Finland, but there are innovative
companies making Moomin products all around the world, including Britain!

Introducing The Crafty Kit Company, a Scottish company that's all about craft, making award-winning needle felting, embroidery and cross stitch kits that suit all levels from beginner to improver, to advanced. And to our great delight, at the start of 2023, they added Moomin to their collection, in collaboration with ©Moomin Characters Ltd™.

Established in 2014 in the beautiful countryside of East Lothian, just outside
Edinburgh, The Crafty Kit Company design and hand make fabulous and fun
craft kits that come complete with everything you need. The kits include all the essential tools, materials and full colour, step-by-step photographic instructions to get you from start to finish on your own crafty project. Beautifully packaged, they make lovely gifts too. They are proud to be able to produce their kits in Scotland, providing jobs in the local area, and contributing to the local economy.

Jo Lochhead, Founder and Creative Director of the Crafty Kit Company says of

the collaboration with Moomin: “To be invited to play even a small part in protecting the legacy of Tove Jansson’s artwork and stories is an honour and a huge privilege
for us. The Moomin characters and their extended family and friends lend
themselves perfectly to being recreated in wool or depicted with needle and
thread. I can’t think of another brand that I would rather represent.”

But what exactly are needle felting, embroidery, and cross-stitch?

Needle Felting is the process of transforming wool into 2D or 3D objects using
a barbed needle. When you felt wool, you're agitating the fibres, so they bond
together, creating a solid fabric.

Embroidery is a decorative art form using fabric, needles, and thread
designed to add texture and embellishment.

Cross-stitch is a form of sewing and a popular form of counted-thread
embroidery in which X-shaped stitches in a tiled, raster-like pattern are used to
form a picture.

Caring for nature and each other.

The Crafty Kit Company won ‘Best Sustainable Craft Company’ both in 2020
and 2021, and the Moomin range was shortlisted for Gift of the Year in 2023.

They are also a member of the Eco-Packaging Alliance, meaning that the packaging is helping to plant trees in areas of need! For many years they have been committed to making regular donations to projects, both in the UK and abroad, that are in line with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Goals, which include: no poverty, no hunger, good health, clean energy, protect the planet, life below water, and peace and justice.

The needle felting kits all contain Corriedale wool fleece; a 100% natural
material that is fully biodegradable with no plastic content; and are packaged
in recyclable cardboard boxes.

The values of The Crafty Kit Company include a desire to do better, open
mindedness, kindness, respect and happiness, something that applies to
everything from product creation to hiring new members of the team, but also
